Shit You Should Be Watching - Please Like Me
It’s not a movie this time but a TV show and if you haven’t seen it get on this bandwagon this instant!!!
PLEASE LIKE ME - Australian TV ABC2 (2013) - Writer/Actor: Josh Thomas - 1 series, 6 episodes, 30 min a piece
I’m just going to summarize what’s on the back of the DVD: Josh gets dumped by his girlfriend, suddenly has a new boyfriend, and has to move back in with his mom after she tries to OD on painkillers. Basically it’s a dramedy about how your parents aren’t heroes and how they’re just as clueless as you are.
The Story: Heads up, when I tell you this is a dramedy, I’m not fucking around. There are moments when it’s hilarious, moments when it’s depressing, and Josh Thomas doesn’t hold back on either front but that’s a good thing. Josh’s goal was to tell story that had a lot of real moments so he based a lot of the show loosely off his own life and that really comes through.
The Characters: I’m going to quote Supportive Husband here (I made him watch it and he’s a rabid fan now) and just say that, “One of the best things about Please Like Me is that everyone is identifiable and for the most part, likeable.” I know that likeability is no longer a MUST for great characters but even the worst characters on this show are hilarious and have amazing moments of vulnerability that make you feel for them. I love everyone on this show.
The Bad: It’s only six episodes!? DAMMIT, AUSTRALIA. Also, I don’t know if there’s going to be a 2nd series yet but I hope there will be because I am DYING. I need MORE. This show and Shameless were the two shows that kept me going this winter, my life feels so empty without them QQ.
Why You’re Gonna Watch This Shit: Because it’s already becoming an underground/tumblr sensation and you don’t wanna be left out, do you? I’ve been watching it since the first two episodes aired (thanks Anthony Langford!) and it’s been incredible watching everyone I follow on tumblr catch onto this show. It’s addicting and funny and fresh and dammit, you wanna be fresh, right!?
WHERE you can find this show: Ok, so, if you look hard enough on Tumblr, you may find links. It’s a hard one to track down cause as soon as links go up they’re taken down but if you look hard enough you should be able to find it. OR, and I’d PREFER YOU DO THIS (so that we get a 2nd series) you can buy the DVD from ABC’s site:
Warning you though, it’s region code 4 (thanks Starking_Mad!). I’ve bought it though cause dammit, I enjoyed the hell outta the show.
